  • 2 pounds eggplant
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup béchamel sauce
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the eggplants and sprinkle with salt; let them sit for 30 minutes.
  3. Rinse and pat dry the eggplants, then sauté in olive oil until golden brown.
  4. In a pan, cook the ground beef with onions and garlic until browned.
  5. Add tomato sauce, cinnamon, nutmeg, and seasoning; simmer for 15 minutes.
  6. Layer eggplants in a baking dish, then add the meat mixture, and top with béchamel sauce and cheese.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes until golden on top.
  8. Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with lentils.
  • You can assemble the dish a day in advance and bake it before serving.
